Portugal Student Visa Guide

Portugal, with its rich maritime history, stunning coastal landscapes, and vibrant cities, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students. The country is home to several universities that are recognised for their quality of education and research. Beyond its academic appeal, Portugal is known for its warm climate, hospitable people, historic sites, and dynamic cultural life, making it an ideal setting for students from around the world to pursue their higher education.

Portugal Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

Students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland will typically need to apply for a student visa to study in Portugal. The process involves two main steps: obtaining a residence visa for entry into Portugal and then applying for a residence permit upon arrival for the duration of your studies.

The initial step is to gain admission to a Portuguese university. Once accepted, you will need to demonstrate financial sufficiency to cover your tuition and living expenses. The Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) suggests having at least €7,200 per year, which is considered the minimum subsistence value.

To apply for a student visa, you should submit your application at the nearest Portuguese embassy or consulate with the following documents:

  • An acceptance letter from the Portuguese university confirming your enrollment in a full-time course
  • Proof of financial means to support yourself for the duration of your stay
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal
  • Health insurance that covers medical expenses and possible repatriation
  • A valid passport and recent passport-sized photos
  • A criminal record certificate from your country of residence
  • A completed visa application form

The visa application fee for students is generally around €90, but it can vary. It’s important to apply for your visa well in advance of your intended travel date, as processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Portugal, students must apply for a residence permit at the SEF to legally stay for the duration of their course. This process involves submitting similar documents as the visa application, along with the results of a health examination.

Portugal Student Visa Work Regulations

Portugal offers opportunities for international students to work while studying. Students with a valid residence permit are allowed to work part-time up to 20 hours per week during the term and full-time during holidays. This allows students to gain work experience, improve their Portuguese language skills, and support their living expenses.

After completing their studies, graduates may explore opportunities to remain in Portugal, such as seeking employment or further education. Graduates can apply for a change of their residence status to pursue these opportunities, further contributing to their personal and professional development in Portugal.
