Malaysia student visa guide

Malaysia, with its diverse culture, stunning natural beauty, and modern cities, is an attractive destination for international students. The country is home to several high-ranking universities offering a wide range of programs in English, particularly strong in areas such as engineering, business, and information technology. Beyond its educational excellence, Malaysia is known for its friendly people, delicious cuisine, and relatively low cost of living, making it an ideal place for students seeking a quality education in a vibrant environment.

Malaysia student visa process and fees

International students planning to study in Malaysia need to apply for a Student Pass, which serves as a student visa. The process typically begins once you have received an offer letter from a Malaysian educational institution. The institution will usually apply for the Student Pass on behalf of the student through the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) system.

To support your Student Pass application, you will need to provide the following documents:

  • A letter of acceptance from the Malaysian educational institution confirming your enrolment in a full-time course.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of your stay.
  • A medical health examination report from a recognised panel of doctors or any registered clinic in your home country.
  • A valid passport with at least 18 months remaining until expiration.
  • Recent passport-sized photographs.

The fee for the Student Pass application includes a processing fee, visa fee, and the i-Kad fee, which altogether can range from RM 1,000 to RM 2,000 (approximately USD 240 to USD 480), depending on your country of origin and the length of your course.

After arriving in Malaysia, students must complete the required post-arrival procedures, including medical screening with an approved provider and collection or activation of their student immigration documents as instructed by their institution and EMGS.

Malaysia student visa work regulations

International students holding a valid Student Pass may be permitted to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during semester breaks or holidays lasting more than seven days, subject to approval from the Immigration Department of Malaysia. Work is generally restricted to approved sectors, including restaurants, hotels, mini markets, and petrol kiosks. Students are not permitted to work in certain roles or sectors, including positions involving cashier duties and activities related to entertainment venues.

This opportunity allows students to gain work experience, understand the local culture better, and manage their living expenses. After completing their studies, graduates may explore opportunities to extend their stay in Malaysia through employment or further education, subject to the country’s immigration policies at that time.
