Luxembourg Student Visa Guide

Luxembourg, a small country at the heart of Europe, is known for its financial centre and high quality of life. It is also becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students, thanks to its diverse institutions, including several prestigious universities and business schools that provide programmes in English and other languages.

Living in Luxembourg as a student allows you to experience a unique blend of cultures and languages, with a high standard of living and efficient public transport connecting you to major cities across Europe.

Luxembourg Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

If you are from an EU/EEA country, you will not need a visa in order to study in Luxembourg. IF you are from a country outside of the EU/EEA, you will need to obtain a visa to study in Luxembourg.

The process for obtaining a student visa to study in Luxembourg involves several steps, beginning with securing a place at a Luxembourgish university. Following your admission, non-EU/EEA students must apply for a temporary authorisation to stay (Autorisation de séjour temporaire) from the Luxembourgish immigration authorities before entering the country.

To apply for this temporary authorisation, you will need to submit the following documents:

  • A completed and signed application form
  • A copy of your passport, which must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay
  • A letter of acceptance from the Luxembourgish educational establishment
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources to cover your stay in Luxembourg (the exact amount required can vary, but as a guideline, it should cover tuition fees and living expenses)
  • Proof of accommodation in Luxembourg
  • A health insurance policy that covers the duration of your stay
  • A recent criminal record certificate or its equivalent from your country of residence

There is no fee for the temporary authorisation to stay application. However, once you arrive in Luxembourg and receive your residence permit for students, a fee of €80 is applicable.

After receiving the temporary authorisation to stay by post, you have three months to apply for a Type D visa at the Luxembourgish embassy or consulate in your home country, if applicable. Upon arriving in Luxembourg, you must make a declaration of arrival at the local commune and undergo a medical check-up. Subsequently, you must apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs within three months of your arrival.

Luxembourg Student Visa Work Rules

International students in Luxembourg are permitted to work part-time to support themselves during their studies. Non-EU/EEA students can work up to 10 hours per week during term time, with the possibility of full-time employment during vacation periods. This arrangement allows students to gain practical work experience and manage their living expenses.

Upon completing their studies, international graduates have the opportunity to remain in Luxembourg to seek employment or start a business. Graduates can apply for a residence permit as a job-seeker or company creator, valid for up to nine months, during which they can look for employment that corresponds to their qualifications.

Studying in Luxembourg offers a unique educational experience in a multilingual and multicultural environment, making it an attractive destination for students from around the globe. With its modern educational facilities, close-knit academic community, and strategic location in Europe, Luxembourg provides a rich setting for personal and academic development.
