Lithuania student visa process and fees

International students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland studying in Lithuania will generally require a long-stay visa or a temporary residence permit, depending on the length of their studies and their nationality. Students enrolled on degree programmes lasting longer than 90 days will typically need to obtain a temporary residence permit for study purposes.

The process begins with gaining admission to a Lithuanian university. Upon acceptance, students must demonstrate financial stability to cover tuition fees and living expenses. The Lithuanian government estimates the cost of living for students to be around €5,000 per annum, which serves as a benchmark for financial preparedness.

Following this, applicants should proceed to submit their visa application through the Lithuanian Migration Department’s website or at the nearest Lithuanian embassy or consulate. The application must include:

  • An acceptance letter from the university confirming enrollment in a full-time course
  • Proof of financial means to sustain oneself throughout the study period
  • Evidence of accommodation arrangements in Lithuania
  • Health insurance coverage for the duration of the stay
  • An English proficiency test score, if the course is in English
  • A valid passport and recent passport-sized photos

The fee for a National D visa application is currently set at €120. It is advisable to apply well in advance of the intended travel date, as processing times can vary based on various factors, including the applicant’s country of origin.

Students staying in Lithuania for longer than 90 days may need to complete temporary residence permit formalities and comply with any registration requirements after arrival, depending on their immigration status.

Lithuania student visa work regulations

International students holding a valid residence permit or other appropriate immigration status for study are generally permitted to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during their studies. During official university holiday periods, students may be able to work additional hours, subject to Lithuanian employment and immigration regulations.

After completing their studies, graduates may be eligible to apply for a temporary residence permit that allows them to remain in Lithuania while seeking employment or establishing a business. This provides an opportunity to transition from study to employment, provided they continue to meet the relevant immigration requirements.
