India student visa process and fees

Most international students who wish to study in India must obtain a Student Visa before travelling. Student Visas are generally issued for the duration of the course or up to five years, whichever is shorter.

The first step is to secure admission to a recognised Indian educational institution. Once you receive your admission letter, you will usually need to provide evidence of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses, along with supporting documents required by the Indian authorities.

Applications are made through the relevant Indian embassy, consulate, visa application centre, or official online visa platform, depending on your country of residence. Required documents may include:

  • A letter of admission from the Indian university or institution.
  • Proof of financial ability to support your studies and stay in India.
  • A valid passport and passport photographs.
  • Any additional documents requested by the Indian authorities or your institution.
  • Evidence of English language ability if required by the university.

Student visa fees vary depending on the applicant’s nationality and location, so students should check the current fee applicable in their country before applying.

International students whose visa conditions require registration must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) within the required timeframe, which is generally within 14 days of arrival for those staying in India for more than 180 days.. This registration is separate from the visa application.

India student visa work rules

India offers more limited opportunities for international students to work while studying. Students on a student visa in India are generally not permitted to take up employment during their studies. However, internships related to their field of study may be allowed, subject to approval from the university and the FRRO. This enables students to gain valuable experience in their field of study while managing their living expenses to some extent.

Upon completing your studies, if you wish to pursue employment in India, you would need to apply for an Employment Visa or an appropriate work permit, depending on your employment situation and the regulations in place at the time.
