Iceland student visa process and fees

Non-EU/EEA students planning to study in Iceland for more than three months need to apply for a residence permit for study purposes, as Iceland does not issue a traditional student visa. Depending on their nationality, students may also need an entry visa to travel to Iceland. The process begins with securing admission to an Icelandic university. Once you have received your acceptance letter, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to support your stay in Iceland. The Directorate of Immigration requires students to show secure means of support of at least ISK 259,951 per month to cover living expenses.

To obtain a residence permit, you must submit an application to the Directorate of Immigration, following the current application procedures and providing the required documents, including:

  • A letter of acceptance from an Icelandic university confirming your enrollment in a full-time course
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover living expenses and any applicable tuition fees for the duration of your stay
  • A valid health insurance policy from an Icelandic insurance company or a foreign insurance company authorised to operate in Iceland
  • A certificate of criminal record from your home country
  • A valid passport and passport-sized photographs

The application fee for a residence permit for studies is ISK 70,000. It is important to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as processing times can vary.

Iceland student visa work regulations

Iceland offers work opportunities for international students during their studies. Students holding a valid residence permit for studies are generally allowed to work up to 60% of full-time employment, which is approximately 22.5 hours per week. This allows students to gain work experience, improve their language skills, and help manage their personal expenses. Student residence permit holders do not need a separate work permit to undertake this permitted employment.

After completing their studies, graduates may have options to remain in Iceland while seeking employment or apply for another type of residence permit if they meet the relevant requirements.
