Finland student visa process and fees

Students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland will need to apply for a residence permit for studies, often referred to as a student visa in Finland. This process begins once you have secured admission to a Finnish university.

To support your application, you must demonstrate that you have the financial means to cover your tuition fees and living expenses. The Finnish Immigration Service requires degree students to show they have at least €800 per month, or €9,600 per year, available to cover living expenses in Finland. Tuition fees, where applicable, must also be covered separately.

The next step involves applying for the residence permit through the Finnish Immigration Service, either online or at your nearest Finnish embassy or consulate, providing the following documents:

  • An official letter of acceptance from the Finnish university confirming your enrolment in a full-time course
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for at least one year
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage for your stay in Finland
  • A valid passport and passport-sized photographs

Residence permit application fees are set by the Finnish Immigration Service and are reviewed periodically. Applicants should check the latest fees before submitting their application, as the amount may change.

It is advisable to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Finland, students may need to register their place of residence with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV). If biometric identification was not completed during the application process, students may also need to visit a Finnish Immigration Service service point to verify their identity.nce and may need to visit the local police or a service point of the Finnish Immigration Service to verify their information if they did not provide biometrics during the application process.

Finland student visa work regulations

Finland offers international students the opportunity to work alongside their studies. Students with a valid residence permit for studies can work an average of up to 30 hours per week during the academic term, with greater flexibility in how those hours are distributed. During official holiday periods, students can generally work full-time, provided their employment does not interfere with their studies. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable work experience, improve language skills and supplement living costs.

After completing their studies, graduates can apply for a residence permit to seek employment or establish a business in Finland. The country provides a supportive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, making it an attractive option for graduates wishing to build their careers in Finland after graduation.
