Studying global development abroad

What is global development?

Global development is the study of how countries, communities, and people grow economically, socially, and politically. It looks at issues such as poverty, inequality, education, healthcare, human rights, and sustainable development. The field also explores how international organisations, governments, and local communities work together to improve living conditions worldwide.

Global development draws knowledge from economics, sociology, political science, and environmental studies. As a student, you will examine how societies change, how policies affect people’s lives, and what strategies can help communities thrive. Your studies may involve research in classrooms, fieldwork in cities or rural areas, and analysis of international case studies.

Why study global development abroad?

Studying global development in another country allows you to see first-hand how development issues affect different communities. You could visit regions where innovative education programs improve children’s futures, or areas where sustainable farming projects help local farmers. Experiencing development work in practice helps you understand complex social, economic, and environmental challenges better than books alone.

Studying abroad also exposes you to diverse perspectives. You will meet students and professionals from around the world, develop cross-cultural communication skills, and build international networks that can support your future career.

What you will study

Global development programs usually combine classroom learning with practical experience. Core subjects may include:

  • Development Economics – studying how economic policies impact poverty, growth, and inequality.
  • Social Policy and Welfare – exploring healthcare, education, and social protection programs.
  • Human Rights and Governance – analysing laws, justice systems, and international regulations.
  • Sustainability and Environmental Development – learning how development can be environmentally responsible.
  • Project Design and Management – planning, implementing, and evaluating development projects.
  • Research and Data Analysis – collecting and interpreting data to assess development outcomes.

Many programs also include field trips, internships with NGOs, or placements with international organisations or government agencies.

Related subjects you might also enjoy:

  • International Relations
  • Public Policy
  • Economics
  • Humanitarian Studies
  • Environmental Policy

Accreditation

At undergraduate level, you may earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSc) in Global Development, International Development, or a related field. Some programs combine development studies with economics, political science, or sustainability.

At postgraduate level, options include a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), or Master of Research (MRes) in Global Development, Sustainable Development, or International Policy. Specialisations may include human rights, social entrepreneurship, or international aid. A PhD is often needed for careers in research or academia.

Professional accreditation may be available for certain roles, such as development project managers, policy advisors, or sustainability consultants, depending on the country.

Careers

A degree in global development can lead to careers in research, policy-making, humanitarian aid, and international organisations. Graduates often work as development consultants, advising governments or NGOs on projects that improve social and economic conditions.

Other career paths include policy analysts, project managers for international aid programs, or specialists in education, healthcare, or environmental development. Opportunities also exist in research institutions, think tanks, and advocacy organisations.

Global development graduates may also work as educators, community coordinators, or journalists reporting on development issues. The skills you gain are valued globally, giving you the chance to make a real impact on people’s lives and the future of communities around the world.
