Studying graphic design abroad

What is graphic design?

Graphic design is the art and practice of creating visual content to communicate messages. It involves combining images, typography, colours, and layouts to convey ideas effectively for print, digital media, and branding.

The subject draws on knowledge from art, digital technology, psychology, and marketing. As a graphic design student, you will learn to create visual concepts, develop brand identities, and design layouts for websites, advertisements, and products. Your studies might take you from design studios to digital labs, workshops, and real-world projects.

Why study graphic design abroad?

Studying graphic design in another country exposes you to different artistic styles, trends, and cultural influences. You might explore contemporary design in Europe, animation and multimedia in the United States, or interactive design in Asia.

By learning internationally, you develop creativity, problem-solving, and communication skills. You also form professional networks with designers, agencies, and organisations, which can support your career development.

Graphic design degrees usually combine creative practice with theory and technical skills. Key areas of study can include:

  • Visual Communication – understanding how images and text convey meaning

  • Motion Graphics – combining animation, video, and graphic design

At postgraduate level, options include a Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Design (MDes) in Graphic Design, Digital Media, or Branding. Specialisations may focus on user experience, interactive design, or motion graphics. A PhD is typically required for advanced research or academic careers in design studies. Some regions also offer professional certification for designers through recognised industry bodies.

Careers

A degree in graphic design can lead to careers in creative industries, marketing, and digital media. Graduates may work as graphic designers, web designers, or brand consultants, creating visual content for businesses and organisations.

Others become illustrators, art directors, or motion graphics designers, producing materials for advertising, entertainment, and education. Many take roles in user experience design, multimedia production, or creative agencies.

Beyond these roles, graphic design graduates may become educators, design strategists, or digital content creators. The skills you develop are valued worldwide, offering opportunities to work on innovative projects in a variety of cultural and professional contexts.
