About International Commercial Law (LLM/PG Dip), PG Dip - at University of Warwick

This new LLM course will enable you to develop the detailed knowledge of all the law required to make a large commercial deal work. It will be particularly relevant if you have a legal background and you want to work for a large commercial law firm or in finance.

Led by Warwick Law School, the course will be taught be world-leading experts – both legal practitioners and academic experts – in commercial law, international banking, and financial regulation and International Economic law. Warwick is a pioneer of the ‘Law in Context’ movement that emphasises how law works in the ‘real world, meaning you will benefit from blended learning that considers legal rules alongside the context in which they operate. You will learn about the principal features of the law governing contracts between commercial people, including the domestic and international financial institutions and sources of law. You’ll also gain understanding of the economic, political, and social underpinnings of the law governing international and transnational commercial transactions, and the development of the law governing these transactions through a variety of mechanisms. In addition, you will consider the wider legal and policy questions affecting the commercial deal.

Modules cover areas including: how finance contracts support mergers and acquisitions; how debt financing works to support the commercial deal; how cross-border contracts differ from domestic contracts; Islamic finance; commercial conflicts of law and taxation of domestic and cross-border transactions. The course is taught by weekly seminars, with reading allocated for the seminars and then discussed in class. You have the option to select some modules from across other LLM programmes or, with the permission of the programme director, from any other postgraduate course offered by a Department within the Faculty of Social Studies. On graduating, career options open to you will include legal practice, international and domestic finance, international diplomacy, management or work in a non-governmental organisation.
