Course Overview

The Foundation Year, which is also offered as a stand-alone CertHE, is designed to allow students to gain the correct skills for entry on to BSc/BEng programmes within the School of Applied Computing. Two streams are offered in the following areas:

  • Computing Stream
  • Electronics Stream

All streams have core common modules offering instruction in skill such as maths, science and academic writing. Each stream also has specialised modules relating to the area of study (see Modules below for details)

Following the successful completion of the Foundation Year (CertHE), students will qualify for entry on to the following degree programmes as follows:

  • Computing Stream -> All degree programmes of the BSc Computing Portfolio, excluding those listed below.
  • Computing Stream (with Further Mathematics option) -> Computer Games Development, Software Engineering
  • Electronics Stream -> BEng Computer Systems and Electronics, BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Key Features

The School of Applied Computing has a long history of "Reaching Wider" and we appreciate the challenges that students can face, often through no fault of their own. We also appreciate the challenges presented to individuals wishing to change career. This programme is intended to address and resolve any deficiencies in students' skills in order to meet the entry requirements for our degree. We have a friendly team of academics who are dedicated to the well-being and academic progress of our students and offer excellent support to students on this Foundation Year.

Modules

Common to all streams:

  • Academic Writing (20 credits)
  • Integrating Project (20 credits)
  • Mathematics (10 credits)
  • Science (10 credits)

Computing Stream:

  • Computer Systems (20 credits)
  • Introduction to Computer Programming
  • Analysing and Solving Problems (20 credits) or Further Mathematics (20 credits)

Electronics Stream:

  • Computer Systems (20 credits)
  • Further Mathematics
  • Introduction to Electronics (20 credits)

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of worksheets, practicals, presentations, projects and examinations. Module assessment is often by assignment. The final mark for some modules may include one or more pieces of course work set and completed during the module. Project work is assessed by written report and presentation.

Tuition Fees

£4,500 for the foundation year.

Additional Costs

It is possible to complete this programme of study without any additional costs.

Students may wish to purchase materials for modules, such as major project but this is not a requirement and will have no bearing on the final grade.
