Course Overview

There is a growing demand for practitioners in Public Health as we aim to prevent disease and promote a healthier nation. The course has been developed to give students an understanding of the major health issues and use their skills to put them into practice.

Students will develop an understanding of health care systems and the major health issues that are faced in the United Kingdom and globally. Students will also gain the practical skills to develop

The modules are taught by health specialists who have previously and are currently working in the area of public health, health promotion and nutrition. All staff are based on campus and have extensive experience of working in higher education and are actively involved in research.

Key Features

BSc Public Health will appeal to those who have an interest in disease prevention and health promotion. There are many opportunities to work in public health across the United Kingdom and beyond. Students will have the opportunity to develop their practical skills whilst on placements. The University has excellent links with local and national public health teams and students are able to put the theory into practice whilst on placement.

Students are taught by lecturers who have considerable experience in public health, and are current practioners.

The area of public health is likely to continue to expand as society tries to tackle the multitude of health issues in the United Kingdom.

Professional Accreditations

In recent years a UK Public Health Register has been developed for Public Health graduates to join once in employment.

Public Health Wales is encouraging all staff within the profession to become accredited.

Assessment

The skills required to transfer health related research into 'real world' practical applications for individual and community health are developed and assessed over the three years of study. To achieve this, the strong academic focus of the degree is supported by practical modules in health promotion, public health nutrition and health assessment.

Whilst on the course, students learn how to present a balanced evidenced argument through their formal written work, as well as via individual and group presentations. Within the final year students will design and conduct their own research project or critical portfolio in a specialist area of their choice.

Specific types of assessments include; essays, laboratory reports, presentations (group and individual), practical tasks, examinations (seen and unseen papers).

Career Opportunities

Graduates from the BSc (Hons) Public Health will be able to pursue a career in Public Health and Health Promotion. This is an area of development across the United Kingdom as authorities aim to help prevent diseases such as Diabetes and heart disease. Graduates may also go on to study at postgraduate level in areas such as Health related MA and MSc degrees and PGCE.
