About Motorcycle Engineering, BEng - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David
Course Overview
The 4 year BEng Motorcycle Engineering programme is intended to provide you with a thorough grounding in mechanical engineering science and its application to design and the solution of a range of engineering problems in the context of the motorsport engineering industry. The inclusive foundation year is designed to develop your mathematical, analytical and study skills, to equip you with the necessary academic skills required to successfully study engineering at a degree level.
Specialist areas of study including advanced competition engine design and competition vehicle dynamics will enable you to focus on areas of specialist interest that can be developed in the Group and Major Project modules. Within many of the modules the course considers the environmental aspects of design and technology which are transferable to a broad range of employment opportunities.
Key Features
You wish to develop your analytical skills in subjects such as Mathematics and Physics to pursue a career in Engineering. You do not have the academic entry requirements for one of our 3 year degree courses but you are passionate about motorcycles and motorcycle sport and see a career in the motorcycle industry as your ultimate goal.
This programme enables students to develop the specific expertise required in such areas as data acquisition and motorcycle dynamics for the design and development of the modern road and competition motorcycle. Students from this programme have been involved with race teams from championships such as British Superbike and MotoGP, and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has excellent contacts in this growing industry. Many of the staff in this university are keen motorcyclists and understand your passion for two wheels. We have a number of competition teams and extra curricula activities that can often be linked with your project and assignment work. Despite the seeming specialisation of this course, however, the skills you will gain are completely transferrable to the wider automotive industry which still provides an outstanding career path for many of our graduates.
Modules
The foundation year 0 is designed to develop your mathematical, analytical and study skills, to equip you with the necessary academic skills required to successfully study engineering at a degree level. Your academic skills will be developed through engineering relevant modules including Mathematics, Engineering Science, Study Skills and IT, Manufacturing Technology and an Engineering Project.
Following the foundation year, a number of themes are developed throughout the course. The Core Engineering Theme with subjects such as Maths, Thermodynamics, Mechanics and Structures is introduced in Year 1, developed in Year 2 with Thermofluid Mechanics and Engineering Structural Design and then explored in greater depth in Year 3 with Stress Analysis and Advanced Computational Methods.
The Design Theme starts in Year 1 with CAED, and is then developed in Year 2 with Computational Methods and the Group project leading into Advanced Computational Methods and the Major Project in Year 3.
Finally the Applied Technology Theme moves through Motorcycle Technology in Year 1, though Motorcycle Dynamics and Engine Performance n Year 2 to Advanced Motorcycle Dynamics and Motorcycle Research and Development in Year 3. Although not a theme in itself, Engineering Management, introduced in Year 2, underpins a successful approach to both the Group and Major Projects.

Career Opportunities
Graduates from this course have found employment throughout the motorcycle industry from specialist component manufacturers though to mainstream motorcycle manufacturers. Graduates are now working in roles such as engine development and calibration and race engineering support. The skills developed on the course are transferable to other industries and many students have moved into the wider automotive industry as well. Graduate destinations include Yamaha Tech 3 Moto GP and Rizla Suzuki.
Each year a number of our graduates have chosen to continue their academic studies to Masters and PhD level.
