This course is aimed at anyone who is interested in the study of education and psychology with a wide and diverse student population, all of whom have one thing in common, the desire to understand and work in both disciplines. The often lively academic debate pushes the boundaries between the two disciplines regarding the nature of human behaviour and different learning approaches stimulates in the student an appreciation of self-reflection, perspective-taking and empirical evidence, a combination not often nurtured in straight honours degrees courses.

Assessment

The programme will offer a range of different assessment methods to provide students with the opportunity to extend their practical and academic skills and encourage independent learning.

These will include traditional assessments such as academic essays and exams in addition to more innovative assessment methods such as academic posters, online assessments, group presentations, and research proposals.

Career Opportunities

This joint honours programme lends itself to a wide number of careers and options for further studies. Students interested in a career in education can progress onto the UWTSD PGCE Primary with QTS programme and become teachers, while students that graduate with a minimum lower second class honours classification are eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society, an important prerequisite for students wishing to go on to further post-graduate study or work in Psychology. You may also choose to pursue Master's level study on the UWTSD MA Education, MSc Applied Social & Health Psychology taught postgraduate degrees or you may wish to pursue an MPhil/PhD in Psychology.

Education Studies Joint Honours

Studies are based around the 'four pillars' of Education Studies which are History, Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy. These are incorporated throughout your studies and combined with other relevant educational topics, such as inclusion and creativity, to provide you with a wide knowledge base as well as focusing on developing a range of other academic and transferable skills. The opportunity is provided in your final year of study to personalise your degree through a range of electives designed to help you make your studies as relevant to your ambitions and interests as possible.

Psychology Joint Honours

Students across all years of the programme have the opportunity to become involved in research, both as participants for undergraduate/postgraduate research projects and as researchers assisting on funded projects within the department

The BPS accredited Psychology Joint Honours component aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills they require to understand how and why people behave in the ways they do and to be able to apply that knowledge in a variety of individual and group settings.

Students will explore the link between psychological theory, research and practice, with a focus on producing a scientific understanding of the mind, brain, behaviour and experience, and of the complex interactions between these. The programme has a strong emphasis on developing psychological research skills which culminates in an independent final year research project.

The Education Studies and Psychology course also boasts a high employability rate for graduating students who are in work within six months of completing the degree. A number of our students also progress to further study at Postgraduate level and we can help you with looking at your options should that be of interest to you.
