Course Overview

Students enrolled in this course will gain the opportunity to delve in to the past and study in depth the cultures and traditions of ancient civilizations. You will compare and contrast how these people lived by closely examining the different areas of everyday life such as the different cultures, philosophies, military and historical backgrounds and beliefs held by various ancient cultures.

By engaging in various different areas of study (archeology, ancient history and culture to name a few), a feature unique to our course, our students will gain an otherwise unobtainable view of the lifestyles and thoughts of these ancient civilizations. You will gain the knowledge to understand how superstition, magic, rituals and the afterlife all played a major role in how these people thought and behaved and how they shaped their world, and ours.

* Year 1 will see you exploring the various cultures through their archeology, texts, histories and mythologies in a series of introductory modules including museum trips and research projects.

* Year 2 will increase your knowledge with focused, wide raging modules designed to take you into the past by incorporating further trips to museums and archives.

* Year 3 will focus on the dissertation, of which you may choose your own topic and a subject chosen by the tutor.

Modules

Typical modules include:

• Pharaohs, Phoenicians and Peoples of the Sea - An introduction to some of the key civilizations of the ancient mediteranean bowl, exploring the rise of urban civilization and state systems. Covering early iron age and bronze age eras, students will also enjoy hands on experience with a trip to the Egypt Centre in Swansea.

Assessment

The programme is assessed in a variety of ways and will include several of the following type of assessment: essays of 1,000 to 4,000 words in length, document analysis, book/ journal reviews, short reports and reflective journals, time tests, seen and unseen exams, field journals, posters, group and individual presentations, dissertations of 10,000 words, wiki's, commentaries and film evaluations.

Career Opportunities

You will develop powers of analysis, logical thought and argument within a supportive and encouraging environment. It will be these skills of communication, understanding, analysis and self-management that provide you with a passport into employment. Types of employment could include museum and archive work, journalism, law, banking, local politics, all types of administrative work, marketing and advertising, and teaching.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2017/18 are as follows:

UK/EU: £9,000

International: £14,900

Tuition fees for years of study after your first year are subject to an increase of 3% for International students and at the capped fee rate as set by the UK Government for UK/EU students.

Additional Costs

There is an optional fieldtrip connected to a module for second and third year students to the Mediterranean to allow students to visit ancient sites first hand. The Faculty subsidises this trip but the cost each year is dependent on airfare, location, and currency exchange rates. The Faculty aims to keep the cost in the range £400-£700.

For the Fieldtrip modules, a deposit is usually required in September/October to ensure a place with the full cost due in December/January. Payment is made to the Finance Office on campus or through the online payment facility.
