Course overview

The Bachelor of Education program aims to graduate students who meet the academic requirements for registration as a teacher in Queensland and who demonstrate: the knowledge, skills, practices and values inherent in the Queensland College of Teachers' ten Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers; the qualities and skills required of a USQ graduate; the attributes of an Education graduate; high levels of facility with personal and professional literacies; a particular awareness, understanding and positive orientation towards redressing the educational disadvantages suffered by indigenous students. The Secondary specialisation also aims to prepare graduates with sound levels of content knowledge in their two nominated teaching areas. There are over 30 different study areas offered from which students can choose. Having two major teaching areas makes them a flexible and desirable educator in the Secondary school environment. Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) will have the skills and experience required to teach students in Years 7 to 12. Strategies to move Year 7 into High Schools in Queensland in 2015 may also provide additional opportunity for those wishing to focus on the Middle Years. Teaching skills are in demand in other areas, including roles with human services and community-based government organisations. Graduates of the Bachelor of Education are eligible to apply for registration as a teacher through the Queensland College of Teachers. To be eligible for registration in Queensland, both domestic and international students must have completed the minimum 40 days of supervised practical experience in Australian Schools.
