About Child Nursing - Graduate Entry (pre-registration), MSc - at University of Southampton

About this course

Become a Nurse, or expand your practice, and change patients' lives.

This two year master's is designed for graduates and career changers who want to become a registered  Children's Nurse. It's also ideal if you're already a qualified Nurse and want to pursue a second field of registration.

Your future career

You'll learn to provide world-leading* care and support to neonates, children, young people and their families. You'll graduate able to make complex decisions, evaluate practice, coordinate care, and advocate for your patients' needs.

Key features of the course

Our experienced educators and researchers will equip you with both the competence and confidence needed for a successful nursing career. With access to advanced facilities and a balanced approach to theory and practice, you'll gain practical skills through hands-on placements in top healthcare settings.

During your programme you will undertake a number of modules.  These include modules where you'll study alongside students from across the School of Health Sciences. In addition, you'll study all nursing modules where students from all three-fields of nursing practice (adult, child and mental health) come together.  You'll also undertake field specific modules related to the child field of practice.

As a Nursing student you will also have two placements in each year.  Placement settings include:

  • neonatal and paediatric intensive care units (NICU and PICU)
  • general, medical, surgical, and specialist paediatric wards
  • emergency departments
  • outpatient paediatric wards
  • special care baby units (SCBU)
  • community placements (such as with the Health Visitors, School Nurses or Community Children's Nurses)
