Course overview

The BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences course is designed to provide in-depth study from a selection of areas across the full spectrum of biology in which we at Plymouth have expertise. Our ethos is `to encourage a spirit of interest in the broad base of modern biology and an attitude which promotes interactions between the different subjects`. This course will equip you with the knowledge and awareness to understand the exciting developments in all of biology`s rapidly moving areas. In this degree you will not be limiting your horizons. We currently offer a focused but broad based course which covers some of the major developments in the biosciences. This complements our other courses offered in specialist subjects. You can be certain that you will be taught by a dedicated group of staff with varied research interests. There is emphasis on both laboratory and field practical skills and progressive development of your key graduate attributes. From the first year modules covering the major areas of biology to your personal research in the final year, we make sure that your studies in biology are not restricted to one limited area but are `The Best of Biology`. Course highlights Study in depth across the spectrum of contemporary biology Emphasis on both laboratory and field practical skills including a residential field trip Equips graduates with knowledge and practical awareness for a variety of careers Transfer to a specialist biology undergraduate scheme course if desired Although we hope you will continue into the BSc Biological Sciences year 2, if you do develop a particular interest after year 1 it may be possible to transfer to one of the specialist courses The new course structure provides a broad based course but you can combine modules in a way in which allows you to pursue part of your study by focusing on major themes a) marine and environmental biology, b) human health and nutrition or c) applied biosciences Enriched by all the major research activities of the School
