About Victorian Literature, MA - at University of Liverpool

This MA in Victorian Literature was one of the first to be established on the period in the UK and concentrates on close analysis of a broad range of literary texts from the period.

The programme has a great deal to offer, whether you simply enjoy Victorian literature or want to prepare for further study. Teaching is usually in small groups, in informal surroundings.

Victorian Studies at Liverpool has a long history of combining a strong literary focus with a commitment to innovative critical techniques and interdisciplinary study. This is reflected in the courses offered on the MA, which offer a programme examining such varied issues such as the relationship of Victorian writers to their Romantic predecessors; the impact of different sub-cultures in the Victorian period (print culture, scientific culture, theatrical culture, decadent culture); the relationship between the individual and society; and how the Victorians have been received and re-shaped in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Your studies will be greatly enhanced by the fact that we run the Gladstone Centre for Victorian Studies in Wales and the North West of England in partnership with other local universities and with Gladstone's Library. There is the opportunity for some MA students to attend weekend discussion colloquia at the Library and chat to academics and postgraduates in Victorian studies from across the North West in an informal and convivial setting, and as part of the MA course all students undertake a research project at the Library, developing their own archival skills in one of the country's most valuable and stimulating Victorian collections.

We welcome postgraduate applications from candidates of all backgrounds and experience.
