On this programme, which is available full- or part-time, you'll study microelectronic systems at an advanced level.

Programme content is updated annually to maintain industry relevance and to incorporate the latest advances.

The programme starts in late September each year and features two semesters of lectures, laboratory classes and seminars, with a third devoted to an individually supervised project.

The programme is built around a core of compulsory subjects examining:-

• large digital system design
• the hardware and software aspects of microprocessor systems
• integrated circuit design

In addition you can choose from a wide range of options to reflect your interests. Subjects typically include:

• optical fibre communications and sensing
• image processing and pattern recognition
• neural fuzzy systems.

Projects

Your final project accounts for 75 credits, including 15 allocated to coursework relating to report writing skills.

The project is examined by dissertation. You'll need to show an in-depth understanding of your topic, mastery of research techniques and the ability to analyse assembled data and assess outcomes.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a UK 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant subject (such as Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Physics and Computer Science) from an accepted University or Institute of Higher Education. Alternative qualifications and all non-UK qualifications which are equivalent to a UK 2.1 honours degree in a relevant subject will be considered. In some cases, a good UK 2.2 honours degree may be considered if strong performance in relevant, formally assessed modules is demonstrated or the applicant has relevant industrial experiences. If you meet our other academic requirements but do not achieve the required level of English, it is possible to come and study at Liverpool upon completion of the University’s summer academic English programmes. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 0.5 (eg you need to improve from 6.0 to 6.5) you should attend the six week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 1.0 (eg you need to improve from 5.5 to 6.5) you should attend the ten week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 1.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.0) you should attend the 19 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.5) you should attend the 29 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 or 2.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.0 to 6.0 or 4.0 to 6.5) you should attend the 40 week course. International qualifications Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.
