About Advanced Engineering Materials, MSc(Eng) - at University of Liverpool

This programme has been developed for graduates from most physical science and engineering disciplines who would like to move their careers into integrated materials science and engineering.

It would also be perfect for people with first degrees in a materials or equivalent discipline.

You'll gain a thorough knowledge of the microstructure- property relationships of structural and functional materials; and of the methods available for processing, testing, examining and characterising these materials.

There is an ever-increasing demand in industry for graduates with interdisciplinary expertise in the science and engineering aspects of materials. Consequently, this programme has been developed for graduates from almost any of the other physical science or engineering disciplines to convert to Materials Science and Engineering, or for students with an initial qualification equivalent to a three year BEng degree in a materials discipline. Successful candidates will acquire a good knowledge of the microstructure – property relationships of structural and functional materials and of the methods available for processing, testing, examining and characterising these materials. This programme is fully accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

The programme consists of a taught component and a major research based project. The taught component is organised in two 12-week semesters with examinations at the end of each semester. The taught part of the programme is assessed in January and May and represents 120 credits from a total of 180. The remaining 60 credits are allocated to the project.

Projects

Project work contributes 60 credits, which will be based on a topic of industrial or scientific relevance, and will be carried out in laboratories in the University or at an approved placement in industry. The project is examined by dissertation, and award of the MSc (Eng) degree will require evidence of in-depth understanding, mastery of research techniques, ability to analyse assembled data, and assessment of outcomes.
