Course overview

Statistics and Financial Mathematics

Year: 2018/19

Description:

We offer a range of PhD opportunities in the School of Mathematics.

DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS

One of the leading centres for mathematical and statistical research in the UK, with a well established international reputation for quality in research and teaching. The Department has 12 academic staff (including 5 Professors) and 14 research students.

The Department maintains a strong profile across a wide range of areas in both theoretical and applied Statistics and Probability.

Research areas are listed below. Shape analysis and image analysis are established areas of departmental research. The work in shape analysis grew out of a long standing interest in directional statistics, while the focus on image analysis came from work in geostatistics and spatial analysis. Recent research in bioinformatics has renewed interest in directional data analysis, and environmental applications have led to new developments in spatial and spatio-temporal modelling.

Other topics for research include estimation of fractal dimension, sufficiency and estimation theory, stochastic inequalities improving on classic limit theorems, evolution processes in random media, and rates of convergence to equilibrium for Markov processes with mixing. A new focus of research is on classical inference, probability theory and stochastic processes. There is also ongoing research in classification and discrimination methods, pattern recognition and data mining.

The Department has also established a Centre for Statistical Bioinformatics to encourage interdisciplinary collaborations.

RESEARCH AREAS

PhD opportunities are available in all of the following areas:

  • Image and Shape Analysis, Spatio-Temporal Modelling
  • Modern Data Analysis
  • Probability, Stochastic Modelling and Financial Mathematics
  • Statistical Bioinformatics

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should have a minimum of a UK Upper Second Class honours degree, or equivalent, in Mathematics and/or Statistics.
