About Performance and Cultural Industries, PhD - at University of Leeds

Performance and Cultural Industries

Year: 2018/19

Description:

The School of Performance and Cultural Industries (PCI) is a stimulating environment that provides a supportive and rigorous community for its postgraduate research candidates, whether they are engaged on traditional or practice-led degrees.

Collaboration and the integration of theory and practice lie at the core of our activities and are manifest in our teaching, our research and in our externally facing work with the arts and cultural industries. PCI has very strong relationships with a wide range of high profile cultural organisations regionally (eg. West Yorkshire Playhouse, Opera North, Transform Theatre Festival and Yorkshire Dance), nationally and internationally, and is active in promoting cultural enterprise as part of the research and learning experience. We work closely with the University's Cultural Institute to maximise the impact of our work with arts and cultural organisations.

Supervisors in PCI are world-leading researchers who produce cutting-edge research which has a significant impact on the city, region, country and wider international stage. Our supervisors have proven teaching expertise and many of them have a professional background in the arts and cultural sector (eg. as performers, dramaturgs, scenographers, dancers, directors, writers, producers, managers, arts educators, policymakers, consultants, etc.).

Our specialist facilities are designed to support a wide range of research in the arts and cultural sector, and specifically in areas of theatre and performance. For example, our stage@leeds building comprises two public theatre spaces of 180 and 50 seats. Postgraduate researchers can also book rehearsal studios and dedicated studio and workshop spaces.

Research training at School, Faculty and University level offers a helpful context at the beginning of a project, as well as offering opportunities for interaction and cross-fertilisation with peers across the Faculty and wider University.

There are currently four PCI research groups comprising academic staff and postgraduate researchers, which provide a supportive forum for reading, exchange and collaboration:

• Audience Experience and Engagement

• Digital Performance

• Performance Training, Preparation and Pedagogy

• Place and Performance

We have also just launched our new Centre for Cultural Policy Research.
