The programme will adopt an evidence-based approach to teacher education; providing a structured and relevant course of professional and academic development for trainee teachers.

It is intended that this programme will:

    • emphasise the development of students' subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and curriculum knowledge.
    • be designed around integrated university-based and school-based learning that emphasises the links between theory and practice.
    • be taught through a series of University-based days and supported by distance learning materials with on-line tutor and fellow-student support.
    • provide structured school-based learning, allowing students to draw from and reflect upon their experiences as beginner teachers and to relate these practical insights to their reading and analysis of current theories and research relating to a range of issues in teaching and learning.
    • introduce a range of classroom research tools that will be applied in the context of the module assignments.
    • develop skills which provide an additional framework for professional reflection and evaluation.
    • challenge students to think creatively and critically about educational policy, process and practice.

Besides access to online materials, the Virtual Learning Environment offers on-going tutor support and learning resources.

    Assessment

Assessment for all four modules is through written assignments, submitted at regular intervals through the year and planned carefully in relation to the demands of school-based work. Assignments draw heavily on students' teaching experiences.
