Course overview

This extended degree is a science conversion programme designed for high-achieving students who wish to progress to a degree in a scientific discipline but have not taken the prerequisite science and mathematics subjects at A-level.The foundation year provides a supportive environment where you can make the transition to university study in the sciences and gain the academic knowledge and study skills you'll need to succeed.

On successful completion of the foundation year, and subject to meeting the specific requirements for progression, you'll continue to year one of your chosen degree courses. You could progress onto a range of degree courses in biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, environmental science, food science and nutrition or psychology. This course is not a progression route for those interested in studying medicine, dentistry or healthcare.

Studies in Science BSc is a four-year extended degree, designed for applicants who don't currently meet the typical science and mathematics entry requirements for direct entry to a degree and who can benefit from a programme that begins with a foundation year which provides intensive, well-structured support.


Once you've successfully completed your foundation year and met your progression goals you'll progress directly onto your chosen degree programme. The Lifelong Learning Centre team remains on hand to help you make the transition to degree-level study

  • Course content

    The foundation year is taught by the Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of Leeds. Staff work closely with you during the foundation year to help identify the degree choices that are most appropriate for you and map out your plans to work towards a successful progression. You'll know from the beginning of your journey what your academic goals need to be and will be provided with guidance throughout the year to help you be as successful as you can be.

    On successful completion of the foundation year, and any other progression requirements, you'll progress to year one of your chosen degree programme.

    Year 1

    Compulsory modules

    • Entry requirements, fees and applying

      Entry requirements

      A-level: ABB or equivalent, excluding critical thinking and general studies.

      The subject range must not match that required by the discipline which you wish to study at degree level.

      Applicants taking Science A-level (in England) will be required to achieve a pass in the practical element in addition to the standard A-level grade requirement.

      GCSE: GCSE English and Science grade C/4 or above and GCSE Maths grade B/6 or above, or equivalent

      • Career opportunities

        On successful completion of the foundation year, and subject to meeting the academic requirements for progression, you could progress onto a range of degree courses in biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, environmental science, food science and nutrition, physics or psychology.
