Cross-Border Studies is a degree programme in the field of linguistics and cultural studies. The programme focuses on an East or Southeast European language of your choice. You also learn or deepen your knowledge of a second language; here you can choose from German, English or Italian. Hence, the programme offers you a transcultural exploration of Slavic languages, literatures and cultures (Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Serbian, Russian, Slovenian) and of their interaction with the Romance and/or German-speaking and/or Anglophone world.
The degree programme in Cross-Border Studies is interdisciplinary, with strong practical relevance and opens up new perspectives on culture and society. Cross-Border Studies instils networked thinking and the ability to reflect and deals with the social prerequisites and dimensions of language and culture. Entry requirements
You do not have to go through a special admission procedure to start the Master's degree in Cross-Border Studies in Klagenfurt.
You only have to meet the following conditions:
- Relevant Bachelor's degree programme or a degree programme of equivalent academic value at another post-secondary educational institution
Graduates of a non-philological Bachelor's degree programme in a relevant subject (e.g. Business Administration, Education and Educational Science, Media and Communication Studies) must also provide proof of the following qualifications: Introductory courses in the field of literature and linguistics (to the value of 6 ECTS credits) as well as language skills depending on the focus language (Slavonic language at level A2, German at level B2, English at level B2 or Italian at level A2 of the CEFR). If basic knowledge of a Slavonic language is not available at the start of the programme, this can be acquired during the first two semesters of study as part of additional courses. The ECTS credits earned can be recognised as open electives. - Proof of proficiency in German or English at Level B2 of the CEFR

Students whose first language is not German must prove knowledge of the German language (language level B2). At the time of application, German language skills of at least level A2 must be demonstrated. German courses and exams are offered as part of the VAAU pre-study course by www.dia.at.
English language level B2
Prospective students who apply for admission to a Master’s degree programme taught in English must provide evidence of English language proficiency at the required level at the time of application.
