Course overview
The Master of Buddhist Studies (MBuddhStud) programme, offered in collaboration with the Centre of Buddhist Studies, is a rich multidisciplinary programme where students are provided with high-quality teaching on the fundamental understanding and in-depth analysis of Buddhism from textual, doctrinal and historical perspective. It introduces students to several Buddhist traditions through a diversity of methodological approaches and offers language courses in Pali, Sanskrit, and Tibetan which lay a solid philological foundation to students' learning in the historical Buddhist traditions. Furthermore, the programme further aims to provide training in the application of teachings, experiences, practices and values of Buddhist traditions to address complex personal, social and global issues of the modern world with particular reference to current scholarly research.
The programme is intended for both professionals in education, administration, business, engineering, medicine, social work, and counselling who are interested in applying Buddhist teachings in their daily work, and for individuals interested in studying Buddhism as a means of spiritual development. It also serves as an excellent basis for candidates planning to study for research degrees in the field.
Entry requirements
To be eligible for admission to the courses leading to a taught postgraduate qualification, a candidate:
a) shall comply with the General Regulations;
b) shall hold a Bachelor's degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose;
c) shall satisfy any other admission requirements which may be prescribed from time to time for the relevant curriculum; and
d) for a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English language requirement applicable to high degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b).
An application for exemption from the above requirements shall be considered on a case by case basis.
