About Global Health and Development, BASc - at The University of Hong Kong

Programme Aims and Features

The Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health and Development [BASc(GHD)] programme, the first of its kind in Asia, provides students with the knowledge and competencies necessary to effectively engage with today’s rapidly evolving, international and interdisciplinary environment and to respond to complex global health and development challenges. This highly innovative interdisciplinary programme will focus on the impact of major global trends such as globalisation, population growth, ageing, urbanisation, and climate change, in which health and development are intertwined.

This programme is suitable for students who aspire to:

  • learn in an interdisciplinary environment
  • solve complex problems
  • be global health and development changers
  • be global citizens and leaders in the community

A distinctive feature of the programme is a compulsory capstone, during which students will be placed into an international health and development agency, supranational, multinational, consultancy group, or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for a 6-month field placement. Through the international placement, students will gain first-hand experience in addressing health and development issues faced by other cultures, countries, or populations. By straddling the summer in between years 3 and 4 and extending through the first semester of year 4 (from June to December), the field placement will offer students an opportunity to synthesise and apply the knowledge acquired from coursework.

Graduates will be competitive candidates in a wide range of global health and development related organisations; be informed citizens of the world; and be prepared to work on complex problems with colleagues from multiple disciplines in multicultural contexts in both private and public organizations.
