We value what you bring to HKU, in terms of your background and culture, and our fees are set at a level that students everywhere can afford, as long as your academic results are good enough!
About Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, BASc - at The University of Hong Kong
Programme Aims and Features
The BASc programme is designed for intellectually ambitious students who want to take control of their learning and develop a broad set of scholarly skills in order to become leaders across a diverse range of fields to meet important global challenges. The BASc aims to equip students with social intelligence, creative problem-solving and analytical skills (both qualitative and quantitative), communication skills, ethical responsibility, and nurture them on how to take an interdisciplinary perspective in understanding our world. Global problems won’t get solved with a traditional curriculum; the BASc programme helps students to make connections and changes in the world. The programme is built on two pedagogical principles. First, students undertake high-quality training from different disciplines: Social Sciences, Sciences, Arts and Humanities. Second, students develop the intellectual toolkit to learn how to intersect disciplines and integrate them through case studies, capstone experiences, and learning from thought leaders, movers and shakers in relevant employment sectors and professions. The curriculum consists of three components.
- Interdisciplinary major:
- Students take three interdisciplinary courses which are co-designed and co-taught by teachers spanning the three faculties, the internship (Social Innovation) and also courses within two pathways: (1) Cultures/ Societies and (2) Physical World/ Biological/ Human Sciences.
- Elective or second major:
- Students can pursue any combination of subjects or a second major of their choice across faculties (e.g., physics, history, psychology, political studies, marketing or management).
- Other essential learning:
- Students take the horizontal courses and fulfil the language and common core requirements of the undergraduate curriculum.
Students will have individual guidance from the academic tutor who will help them design a course of study that meets their passions and provides a coherent course of academic study.
