About Lifelong Learning Sector (ESOL and Literacy), PCE - at University of Greenwich

Our country thriveson its multicultural community. Here you will learn how to teach essentialliteracy skills to students where English is their second language.

If you want teachLiteracy and English for Speakers of Other Languages in further education ourfull time Professional Certificate in Education (PCE) will give you the skills youneed for further education teaching and classroom management. Whether you wanta career teaching in colleges, adult education centres, art colleges, healthcare or community organisations.

Our PCE programmewill lead to the essential qualifications required. We also encompass trainingfor public services and a wide range of commercial and voluntary organisations.

Our programme willteach you how language and literacy is acquired and learned. You will reviewand analyse a variety of innovative approaches and resources for the teachingof literacy and ESOL. This will include the four key skills of reading,writing, speaking and listening. This is taught in a range of contexts andembedded models.

During your time withus you will plan, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learningstrategies. Most importantly you will learn how to generate enthusiasm forlanguage learning, as well as how to challenge and empower your learners.

Programe structure

Our core programme will see you based in a placement collegewhere you will participate in a range of professional activities. In Phase 1,you will be there for three days a week to observe and undertake teaching inyour subject area. For the remaining two days, you will be based at theuniversity campus. You will complete between 25 and 50 hours of teaching duringthis time.

In Phase 2, you willattend your placement college for four days a week, and the university for thelast day. In total you will complete a minimum of 125 hours of teachingexperience.

By the end of your teachertraining with us you will have gained an awareness of a range of keytheoretical and practical issues relating to the teaching of literacy and ESOLin the lifelong learning sector.
