About Midwifery, BSc (Hons) - at University of Greenwich

What could be more rewarding thanpreparing women and their families to bring new life into the world?

Our degree will prepare you for theresponsibilities of a career as a registered midwife. We will provide you withthe skills required to meet the needs of both women and babies. Here you willlearn accountability for the hugely important role you will play in theirlives, both during and after pregnancy.

You will learn to develop and maintaina trusting relationship with women and their families from a wide range ofdifferent social and cultural backgrounds. During your studies you will learnto recognise the biomedical changes of pregnancy and childbirth, as well asinfluences on expectant mothers' mental, social and emotional wellbeing.

In order to develop multi-professionaland collaborative working, during our three year degree we offer sharedlearning between midwifery and nursing students. It is here you will developthe skills of an autonomous practitioner, working closely with other members ofthe multi-disciplinary team in hospitals and the local community. Sharedlearning will be in areas such as biological and social sciences, professionalvalues, ethics, research and informatics.

Our degree is made up of 50%theory, 50% practice and you will be assessed in both. We have an innovativeteaching team that will allow you to work under the expert supervision ofexperienced midwives.

We are proud of our reputation ofhaving strong links with placement providers. These will take place in avariety of settings from women's homes to hospital placements and communityclinics. You will also get the opportunity to care for women giving birth athome, in birth centres and in labour wards.

Throughout your degree we prepare youto apply for registration as midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council(NMC). One of the main aims of our degree is to help you achieve the outcomesidentified in the NMC Standards for Pre-registration Midwifery Education(2009).

These include having the competenciesrequired to achieve the NMC Standards (Standard 17), the Essential SkillsClusters for Pre-registration Midwifery Education and the requirements ofDirective 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (2005),Articles 40 and 42. We also support our students to develop the principlesand values surrounding the NHS Constitution (2013) and Compassion in Practice(2012).
