Course overview

Language and literacy isone of the most vital skills you can give a student.

Our two-year accelerateddegree is designed for those looking for a three year entry intoteaching, either in the secondary or post-compulsory (further education) sectors when followed bya PGCE.

We will encourage you to think critically about literacy andthe English language. Together we will explore their fascinating historical andcultural contexts as well as literary forms, linguistics and languageacquisition. Our expert lecturers will introduce you to different modes ofcritical thinking and teach you how to employ these methods in literary studyand beyond.

Our degree will prepareyou for employment in language and literacy education, as well as the creativeindustries. Following our accelerated degree, you be very well-placed toprogress into a secondary or lifelong learning in further education teachertraining qualification, via a PGCE or the School Direct training initiative.

We will provide theopportunity to contextualise subject knowledge in relation to practice viaspecific modules. You will have access to the expertise and knowledge from twofaculties. The core subject knowledge is hosted and delivered by our Faculty ofArchitecture, Computing and Humanities at our beautiful Greenwich campus. This isthen blended together with our Faculty of Education and Health at the AveryHill campus.

The aims of the programme are:

  • To emphasise acquisition of theoretical, conceptual and empirical knowledge
  • To apply knowledge within a practical framework
  • To develop in students associated skills, and to promote transferable skills.
