How a child learnsin their early and primary years can have a lasting impact on their entireeducation.

Work placements

Yourteacher training will takeplace in sessions at the university with our expert tutors, and with vitalon-the-job placements. Our degree has a strong urban focus, partnering withmany contrasting primary schools andearly years settings. This will allow you to immerse yourselves in schools withrich multicultural traditions. Each year, you will spend approximatelyeight weeks observing and working alongside experienced teachers in a school,with increasing responsibility. By the time you achieve Qualified TeacherStatus at the end of Year 3, you will have the confidence and skills tobegin a rewarding career as a primary teacher.

Degree structure

Our degree aims togive you an insight into education in the wider context. So in addition tomainstream school placements, during Year 2 of your study you will undertake atwo-week enrichment placement. This will be in an alternative setting such asan education department within a museum or a special school.

In Year 3, you willbe able to develop a personal interest or area of expertise within primaryeducation. This will be through an option and final research project. There isalso an opportunity for mainstream students to opt for a mathematicsspecialism. If you wish to beconsidered for the maths specialism route you will need to apply for the mainstream primaryeducation and register your interest towards the end of the first year -although it is wise to note that places are limited.

Ofsted inspection

Our primarydepartment staff are well-qualified and experienced primary practitioners.During our most recent Ofsted inspection, our staff were found to be 'generouswith their time and very accessible'.
