Course overview

Mechanical engineering plays a vital role in manufacturing and technological advancement and impacts on society at many different levels.

What will I study?

You will develop a fundamental understanding of mechanical engineering principles and learn to apply them to real engineering problems.

You will study four main themes throughout the programme:
  • Engineering science – which addresses control, dynamics, electricity, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, materials, statics and structures, stress analysis, thermodynamics and vibrations.

  • Engineering practice – which focuses on the procedures of engineering manufacture with an emphasis on communication, drawing and computer-aided design.

  • Design – which is a thread running through the whole degree programme.

  • Professional engineer – which develops your awareness and understanding of the organisation of industry, finance, human behaviour and the engineer’s responsibility for health, safety and environmental issues.

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of techniques including lectures, small group and individual project work, labs, tutorials, computing skills, design assignments, presentations, a teambuilding course and business management tasks that are integrated together throughout the degree programme.

Special features
  • The degree programme has very close links with industry with industrialists contributing to projects, lectures and case studies, as well as vacation and year-out employment opportunities for students.

  • Overseas study in Europe, North America or elsewhere can be an integral part of the degree programme.

Note

Accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers assures you of a speedy route to chartered engineer status.
