Course overview

This is the study of the world’s aquatic environments, which provide a fascinating diversity of animals and plants for the biologist to investigate; these studies are increasingly important for the future management and conservation of our aquatic resources and the development of many different forms of aquaculture.

What will I study?

In the first two years you will study general science and biology courses. In second year you will be introduced to the study of animal diversity and ecology. In addition, you will be able to choose from a wide range of other courses.

If you progress to Honours you will learn about the fundamental aspects of the biology of aquatic organisms, with special emphasis on their application to management of aquatic environments and aquaculture. Third year topics include an introduction to aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate animals, animal function, the processes taking place in open waters, bottom dwelling communities and the seashore, and pollution in aquatic environments.

In fourth year you will study a selection of these subjects in greater depth and with a more applied emphasis. There are three field courses including an optional overseas field course to examine coral reefs and visits to hatcheries, fish farms, aquaculture projects and other relevant sites. You will also undertake an original research project under the supervision of a researcher.

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group tutorials, seminars and lab and fieldwork.

Special features

You may be eligible to take a one-year work placement as an integral part of this degree programme, registering for an MSci degree in Marine & Freshwater Biology. The placement year is normally spent doing research in industry or some other organisation in the UK or abroad.

You will have direct access to the Marine Biological Station at Millport in the Firth of Clyde and the Scottish Centre for Ecology & the Natural Environment on Loch Lomond.
