Course overview

The design, development and management of large-scale computerised information systems, which are critical to organisations in the 21st century, brings major challenges and opportunities. The MSc Information Systems offers a flexible programme of study that aims to explore the industry and prepare the student for a career with a technical focus, or further study via a PhD.

Study

The focus is on the complex social and technical issues involved in building and maintaining large information systems, drawing on ideas and techniques from a range of disciplines. The course grows your understanding of the issues in designing and developing information systems with a grasp of the fundamentals of rapid systems development, contemporary approaches, analysis and design, with the context and success factors required for successful information systems projects. You will also gain practical experience of e-commerce systems development.

Structure

You will take a number of taught modules covering technical and organisational aspects of the development, management and use of modern information systems. The choice of modules is made according to your academic background, experience and interests. You will complete a dissertation on a subject in the field of information systems, likely in collaboration with a company or organisation.

Teaching

The School of Computing Science at UEA maintains close ties with industry professionals, with many of the student assignments directly seeking solutions to real world problems. The School utilises its internationally recognised research commercially, and graduates of this course often use taught technical and entrepreneurial skills to fulfil influential roles within the local and international community.

Employability

As a graduate from this course you can pursue a career in areas such as software engineering, systems analysis, IT management or general management with a technical focus. You can also choose to continue your education through a PhD to follow a career in industrial research or academia.
