Course overview
This masters degree will:
- provide professional development in the area of Reading Recovery for experienced teachers
- impart a deeper understanding of the processes involved in learning to read, write and spell, the sources of difficulties, and approaches to intervention
- enable you to read research critically and to design and conduct your own small-scale research.
This masters degree provides the opportunity to:
- draw on the strengths of a team with research expertise in literacy and experience in evaluating early literacy interventions
- investigate literacy acquisition and problems in depth, covering reading, writing and spelling
- access the only professional development programme in the UK and Europe for Reading Recovery teacher-leaders.

Entry requirementsA good honours degree in a relevant subject or the equivalent, plus Qualified Teacher Status and experience of mainstream class teaching at Key Stage 1. You must normally be based in the UK or Ireland and be seconded by your local authority, supported by a school or school cluster, or intend to function as an independent, self-supporting teacherleader in a specific area.

- Research methods in literacy
- The theory and practice of Reading Recovery.
By coursework assignments, including two case studies and a portfolio, and a 10,000-word report.
AttendanceMixed mode, including morning sessions working with children in Reading Recovery, afternoon fieldwork sessions, and full-day and evening face-to-face taught sessions.
