Course overview
This masters degree will:
- develop your understanding of the linguistic and cultural resources and needs of minority ethnic and bilingual learners
- equip you with knowledge about language description, and the ways that bilingual learners acquire and use language in schools and colleges in the UK and internationally
- emphasise the ways in which teachers can best support the language and literacy development of children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
- cover the needs and circumstances of the range of bilingual learners from nursery level to young adults.
This masters degree provides the opportunity to:
- acquire theoretical and practical knowledge about bilingualism in contemporary societies
- investigate good practice in multilingual teaching and classroom interaction
- gain an in-depth knowledge of multicultural and multilingual communities such as London
- analyse and carry out research in multilingual classrooms.
Teachers, administrators and researchers who work in the field of English as an additional language (EAL), or who teach bilingual learners in multilingual schools.
Entry requirementsA good first degree. Most applicants have a teaching qualification, but this is not a formal requirement.

By coursework assignments of up to 5,000 words and a dissertation portfolio of up to 17,500 words.
AttendanceFace-to-face daytime and/or evening sessions.
