Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate Nursing in the Community (PGCNIC) course is based on the philosophy that nursing in the community is practice-centred. The overall aim of our course is to develop and inform nurses for the challenges of nursing in the community in primary health care. This course is a Postgraduate Certificate, 30 credits of a level nine (60 credits) of the National Framework of Qualifications (National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI), 2003).

Theory modules:
NU6043 Adults and Older People in the Community (5 credits)
NU6044 Health and Health Promotion: Concepts and Principles (5 credits)
NU6095 Primary Health Care Services in the Community (5 credits)
NU6096 Nursing in the Community in Primary Health Care 1 (10 credits)
SS6016 Health and Personal Social Services (5 credits)


Note: There is no clinical practice/practicum module in this pathway. However, NU6095 above incorporates field visits within the context of primary care services.

Course Practicalities

The Postgraduate Certificate Nursing in the Community (PGCNIC) is a one-year part-time course. It involves 120 lecture hours, 180 hours of self-directed reading and three days of clinical community placement.

Assessment

The course is assessed by a combination of oral examination, academic papers and a professional portfolio booklet.
