About Greek and Roman Civilisation - Arts, BA (Hons) - at University College Cork (UCC)

Overview

This course covers the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, from Rome's foundation, c. 753BC, until the eclipse of Greek and Roman culture in the East, c. AD750. This includes the study of mythology, literature (poetry, prose, drama), art, architecture, and military and political history. No knowledge of the ancient languages is required, but you will also be given the opportunity to learn some Greek or Latin if you wish to do so.

Course Details

Year 1
All students take the same introductory Greek and Roman Civilisationmodule. This is divided equally between Greek history and culture and Roman history and culture.

The Greek section includes a survey of Greek history from the Mycenaean period (c.1600BC) until the death of Alexander the Great (323BC), followed by an examination of selected key works of art, architecture (e.g. the Parthenon) and literature (e.g. Homer's Iliad).

The Roman section includes a survey of Roman history from the emergence of Etruscan civilisation (c.800BC) until the end of the first imperial dynasty with the death of Nero (AD68), followed by an examination of selected key works of art, architecture (e.g. the Colosseum) and literature (e.g. Virgil's Aeneid).

Year 2
You choose from a variety of modules according to availability and interest. The topics will include:

• The Rise of Athens
• Roman Imperial History AD14-68
• Greek Mythology

Year 3
You choose from a variety of modules according to availability and interest. The topics will include:

• Alexander the Great
• The Late Roman Empire AD284-395
• Byzantium and the Rise of Islam
• The Rise of Christianity

Costs: Full-time EU/EEA/Swiss State undergraduate students may be exempt from paying tuition fees. The State will pay the tuition fees for students who satisfy the Free Fees Criteria. In 2016/17 the Student Contribution Charge will be EUR 3,000 and the Capitation Fee will be EUR 165.

Course Practicalities

All modules in Years 2 and 3 are 5-credit modules of 24 lectures each. There are no tutorials in any year.

Assessment

Written exams will take place before Christmas and in May. Not all modules will have formal examinations. Many modules use other types of assessment.

Year 1 is assessed by a class test at the end of each semester, as well as a three-hour examination at the end of the year. Assessment varies from module to module in Years 2 and 3, but usually includes a 1.5-hour examination at the end of the year.
