Course overview

What is MSISS?

MSISS is about solving business problems and it approaches this from two related directions.

First there is the mathematical side. This uses quantitative methods (such as statistics, probability and operations research) to resolve a wide range of day-to-day and strategic problems faced by managers.
Secondly there is the technology side. This combines the above with a range of computer tools (such as spreadsheets, databases and simulation).

To enable students to do this, MSISS teaches skills in both of these areas as well as providing a solid grounding in business basics. The emphasis is on building up analytical skills, flexibility and creative thinking. One of the remarkable features of MSISS is the range of careers that MSISS graduates take up.

The course has been designed to give you the qualifications needed to become a well-rounded business person with good numeracy skills and the ability to apply computing and mathematical solutions to everyday problems.

Course overview

This programme focuses on three main subject areas:

  • Business and management

  • Quantitative analysis

  • Information technology and systems.

These are combined with interpersonal skills such as interviewing and making presentations, which are taught explicitly and also built into the teaching of other subjects. An optional modern language course is also available.
The Sophister (third and fourth) years provide the opportunity to specialise in an area of your choice.

Is this the right course for me?

This course is ideally suited to students who like solving complex problems and are interested in both technology and business. The range of subjects studied is wide and challenges students’ abilities on several fronts, but leads to graduates who have the ability to think about issues in both technical and business terms. MSISS is quite unique – there is no other course in Ireland which offers this mix and graduates are highly employable.
