About Applied Social Research, MSc - at Trinity College Dublin

The M.Sc. in Applied Social research is a one year taught course. It is designed for graduates in social science or related disciplines who want to develop their research skills with a view to employment in research or proceeding to doctoral studies.

Using a combination of lectures, workshops and practical assignments, this M.Sc. programme will train graduates to do the following:

  • design and conduct primary research using interviews and questionnaires;

  • analyse the research data collected with the

  • assistance of computer programmes (SPSS and N-Vivo);

  • write up and present a research report

Students attend lectures and complete assignments over the first two terms (Oct - March). They then go on a work placement for three months (April - June). This gives students further practical research experience. Each student then completes a research dissertation under academic supervision over the summer months finishing the course at the end of September.

Initiated in 1997, the M.Sc. has established an excellent reputation in training students. Graduates of the course are employed in a variety of research organisations, both public and private.

In addition, several graduates of the M.Sc. have gone on to do doctoral studies in Ireland or abroad as the course is an excellent foundation for those who wish to subsequently do a Ph.D.
