Course overview
Biology is a rapidly developing field covering areas such as genetics, physiology, biotechnology and plant biology. This course builds on your understanding of biology to develop the skills and knowledge that employers value.
Your studies include
the interaction of biochemistry and genetics with human behaviour
the effect of human, microbiological and plant activity on the environment
plant biology in the molecular world
analytical, reflective and critical thinking for biologists
how biotechnology affects society
The course has a strong laboratory focus and you develop skills in the latest practical techniques. Lab work in our modern and well-equipped facilities makes up 20 per cent of your timetable.
A strong theme of professional development is also embedded in the course to enhance your growth as a scientist and improve your employability.
We offer a fully supported paid work placement in year three, which allows you to develop your skills and makes you more attractive to potential employers.
Our national and multinational placement partners include * GlaxoSmithKline * AstraZeneca * Pfizer Limited * The Welcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge * biotechnology industries. Placements typically pay between £8,000 and £17,000 per year.
You can then combine all the skills and knowledge you have gained by completing a major research project. This is usually completed in our laboratories with the guidance of an academic supervisor. Sometimes it can be carried out at your placement organisation.
Most of our teaching staff are active in our Biomedical Research Centre (BMRC)http://www.shu.ac.uk/research/bmrc/. This allows us to feed scientific developments directly into our courses.
We constantly update the course, including the comprehensive practical laboratory programme, to keep abreast of scientific developments.
Many of our graduates go on to postgraduate study, including research degrees (PhD), masters degrees (MSc) and teacher training.
