Course overview
Biochemistry integrates biology and chemistry to examine the living organism at molecular level.
This course covers various life forms from comparatively simple bacteria to mammals.
You study the role of biochemistry in
clinical biochemistry for understanding and treating disease
the molecular processes in metabolism, DNA replication and hormone action and how disrupting normal cell functions causes dysfunction and disease
understanding how plants use light energy and how environmental change can affect it
how we use microorganisms in bioremediation, such as bacteria to clean oil spills
The course has a strong laboratory focus and you develop skills in the latest practical techniques. Lab work in our modern and well-equipped facilities makes up 20 per cent of your time.
A strong theme of professional development is also embedded in the course to enhance your growth as a scientist and improve your employability.
We offer a fully supported paid work placement in year three, which allows you to develop your skills and makes you more attractive to potential employers.
Our national and multinational placement partners include * GlaxoSmithKline * AstraZeneca * Pfizer Limited * The Welcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge * biotechnology industries. Placements typically pay between £8,000 and £17,000 per year.
You can then combine all the skills and knowledge you have gained by completing a major research project. This is usually completed in our laboratories with the guidance of an academic supervisor. Sometimes it can be carried out at your placement organisation.
Most of our teaching staff are active in our Biomedical Research Centre (BMRC)http://www.shu.ac.uk/research/bmrc/. This allows us to feed scientific developments directly into our courses. We constantly review course content, including the comprehensive practical laboratory programme, to keep abreast of scientific developments.

Many of our graduates go on to postgraduate study, including research degrees (PhD), masters degrees (MSc) or teacher training.
