Course overview

This visionary architecture course places environmental design at its core. The content is relevant and focused on the future, where environmental issues and sustainable design are becoming central to our development. The course provides a rigorous education over a wide curriculum to prepare you for a career in architecture. We encourage you to develop creative architectural solutions that provide healthy and sustainable environments gain an understanding of design inspired by microclimate and global issues use new technologies to underpin your designs You spend around half your time working in the design studios on projects to develop your creativity and problem solving skills with close support from tutors. Lectures, tutorials, presentations and field trips provide inspiration and a knowledge base for your design projects. Our academic staff have expertise in research, consultancy, design and engineering in architecture, environmental design and building technologies. We regularly use visiting lecturers and design tutors from local architectural practices to bring further experience to the course. Environmental laboratories and computer-based simulation software enable you to produce designs that exploit passive and renewable energy systems. Workshops and technician support are also available for making and testing your designs. Studios are well-equipped with computers and we teach the industry standard computer-aided design systems as core subjects. Lectures explore the latest thinking on * environmental issues * architectural theory * cultural studies * professional practice * building technology. Field trips focus on national sites and buildings. European field trips during your second and third years explore the culture, history and architecture of cities such as * Paris * Barcelona * Florence * Helsinki * Berlin * Rotterdam * Dublin. Our final year students have enjoyed consistent success in the Royal Institute of British Architects’ White Rose Student Awards. This is an annual competition and showcase for the best architecture graduates in the Yorkshire region. Along with many commendations and best presentation prizes, our students were awarded the highest honour in 2005 and 2006.
