Biomedical science applies biological sciences to medicine. As progress in science, medicine and healthcare continues to advance, the area of biomedical sciences is also a dynamic and changing field. A biomedical scientist must first understand the normal physiological processes of the human body and then investigate the processes which lead to disease how disease is diagnosed and monitored how this knowledge can aid the design of new therapies Biomedical scientists need to be knowledgeable, motivated and innovative. You graduate from this course as a skilled scientist with these traits. A strong theme of professional development is also central to your learning to enhance your growth as a scientist and improve your employability. Year one covers the underlying principles of biomedical science such as cell biology, physiology and analytical science. In the second and final years, you develop a more detailed knowledge in specialist areas including * immunology * molecular biology * clinical biochemistry * medical microbiology * cellular pathology * pharmacology. This equips you for a career in a wide range of organisations. We offer a fully supported paid work placement in year three, which allows you to develop your skills and makes you more attractive to potential employers. The placements can open up many career opportunities. Our students are often offered a job by their placement company when they graduate. Our national and multinational placement partners include * NHS hospitals * GlaxoSmithKline * AstraZeneca * Pfizer Limited * Covance Clinical Research * biotechnology industries. Placements typically pay between £8,000 and £17,000 per year. You can then combine all the skills and knowledge you have gained by completing a major research project. This is usually completed in our laboratories with the guidance of an academic supervisor. Sometimes it can be carried out at your placement organisation. Most of our teaching staff are active in our Biomedical Research Centre (BMRC)http://www.shu.ac.uk/research/bmrc/. This allows us to feed scientific developments directly into our courses.
