Course overview
The public relations industry in the UK is a rapidly expanding area. There are opportunities for exciting and rewarding graduate careers ranging from events management and international communications to lobbying and marketing.
The course focuses on developing your understanding of how public relations works in the real world. It provides you with the core skills needed to research, plan, implement and manage a PR campaign to a professional standard.
These skills include * editing * electronic publishing * writing for print and broadcast media * communication * presentation * IT * campaign planning * crisis management * ethics.
You examine and evaluate key theories relating to PR and engage with current debates about the impact of public relations on society and the media. You also study key professional issues including ethics and corporate social responsibility, regulation and media law.
Our teaching staff include specialists with extensive industry experience in public relations, journalism, media and new media technologies. This reflects the professional environment you are likely to work in, where these areas often overlap.
We have strong personal and professional links with public relations practitioners and have established an industry advisory board to support these connections.
You experience working for real clients to produce a portfolio of work to show prospective employers. In your final year you apply your theoretical and practical learning to an external project. We also offer placement opportunities for you to gain further industry experience during your studies.
You choose from optional modules, enabling you to tailor your degree to follow your chosen career path. Optional modules include * intercultural communication * celebrity culture * sex media * communicating through photography.
During the course, you build a portfolio of work which includes * press releases * press cuttings * campaign leaflets * photo calls. This records your development and improves your employability.
