Course overview
This course is for people with relevant qualifications or academic credit who want to teach mathematics in secondary schools. There is a shortage of qualified mathematics teachers.
The course includes
* one year of mostly subject-based study at degree level with some experience in schools
* a final professional year where you gain significant teaching experience in at least two schools, and develop teaching skills that meet the standards for qualified teacher status (QTS)
* university-based study for professional development
You learn to think critically about the subjects you study and about how people learn. You complete research and reflection to support your studies and personal development.
During the early part of your course you have some school experience. In your final year you spend at least 24 weeks in schools.
We assign you a school-based trained mentor to help your development. Your teaching skills improve through working with individual pupils, small groups and whole classes.
We have strong partnerships with secondary schools in the area and many of our trainees find employment in our placement schools.
We teach you alongside other education students. You are taught by mathematics education tutors and other education specialists who share a deep interest and commitment to teaching and learning.
Occasionally a student decides after the first year that teaching may not be for them. We offer a conversion to a non-QTS honours degree course in the final year. You then study mathematics and/or education modules without the school practice. This allows you to gain an honours degree in mathematics and education.
