Course overview
This course is for high achieving graduates in engineering and the physical sciences who wish to develop and apply their technical knowledge to the world of sport.
It gives you the skills and knowledge to work at the cutting edge of research and development in the sports equipment industry. The course also provides a strong platform for PhD level study.
The sports industry is a large and rapidly growing area of the world’s economy. The global market in sports equipment is driven by technology and innovation.
You develop a biomechanical and physiological understanding of athletes enabling you to analyse the athlete equipment interactions in sport.
You also enhance your technical, problem solving and engineering skills and learn to apply them to improving sporting equipment.
Towards the end of your course, you complete a major research project with an industrial partner. This increases your practical understanding of sports engineering, and provides you with vital work experience to improve your employability.
We are the first university in the UK to offer a postgraduate course is sports engineering.
Sports Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University
The course is led by the Sports Engineering Grouphttp://www.shu.ac.uk/research/cses/sports_engineering.html in our Centre for Sport and Exercise Science. The group is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for research and consultancy with over 100 years of experience.
It is led by Professor Steve Haake, founding chairman of the International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA), founding editor of the journal Sports Engineering and author of three books and over 90 publications.
The group has close ties to many different sports companies and organisations. Recent partners include - Adidas - Prince - Ping - Planet X Bikes - Rawlings - International Tennis Federation - UK Sport (innovation partner).
The Sports Engineering Group are offering two scholarships for gifted and motivated students. We also expect to offer at least one funded PhD per year to graduates of this course.
