Course overview

IT infrastructure is vital for the effective working of most organisations and businesses, and software engineers are at the heart of supporting and developing the infrastructure. Software engineers need to have relevant, applicable development skills to design reliable solutions that meet user needs and support business processes. We designed this course to provide a practical and vocational introduction to software engineering. It has a strong focus on using the contemporary tools, methods and techniques needed by professionals in software engineering. You also gain an understanding of project management and business processes in the IT industry. Throughout the course you learn to * develop, design and implement IT systems for various software applications * understand and manage the processes used to produce software As you progress you develop your technical skills. This enables you to become a confident project developer and decision maker in software engineering. You can gain vendor certification across a range of topics including Java Certified Programmer and Microsoft Certified Professional. We have strong links with a wide range of employers and industries, which allow you to take advantage of first class work placements. Employers include * HSBC * Lloyds TSB * Eli Lilley * Yorkshire Television * NPower * Ford * Citrix * PlusNet. You improve your technical computing skills and gain a comprehensive understanding of business at masters level, which strengthens your employability. You must be motivated, enthusiastic and have good interpersonal skills. You must also have the drive and initiative to complete this undergraduate/postgraduate course. You graduate with a masters degree at the end of four years' study. This means you have the advantage of the undergraduate fee repayment structure where you don't start paying back your fees until you are earning above a set limit. This is currently £15,000 a year. The normal study route is four years but you can choose to take an added work placement year. Or you can take the sponsored route, which allows you to study and gain professional experience at the same time in partnership with an employer.
